Where Does Amber Come From?

Baltic amber, sometimes called succinite for its high succinic acid content, accounts for the majority of the world’s amber supply. It formed roughly 44 million years ago from the resin of ancient coniferous forests that once covered northern Europe.
Other significant sources include:
- Dominican Republic: Known for exceptional clarity and frequent, well-preserved inclusions. Dominican amber is younger than Baltic amber, typically 15 to 20 million years old.
- Myanmar (Burmese amber): Much older, dating to the Cretaceous period (around 99 million years ago). Burmese amber has yielded extraordinary scientific discoveries, including dinosaur-era insects and feathers.
- Mexico: Similar in age to Dominican amber, from the Chiapas region.
- Various other locations: Including parts of the United States, Canada, Lebanon, and elsewhere, though typically in smaller quantities.

Baltic amber tends toward warm yellows and oranges; Dominican amber can be remarkably clear or display rare blue fluorescence. The age and geographic origin of amber determine what kinds of creatures might be preserved inside, since different ecosystems existed in different places at different times.
Is Baltic Amber Real Amber?
Yes ÔÇö Baltic amber is not only real amber but the most abundant and historically significant variety. The question arises because the amber market does include imitations and treated materials, but “Baltic” as a designation refers to genuine fossilized resin from the Baltic region.
Baltic amber has been traded for thousands of years. Ancient peoples valued it enough to transport it across Europe along routes historians call the “Amber Road.” It has been carved, polished, and set into jewelry since the Stone Age. The scientific name succinite comes from succinum, the Latin word for amber, reflecting how central Baltic material has been to human understanding of this substance.
What distinguishes Baltic amber chemically is its succinic acid content, typically between 3% and 8%. This is sometimes used in identification, though it requires laboratory analysis. For most purposes, the combination of physical properties, appearance, and provenance documentation establishes Baltic amber’s authenticity.
How Can You Tell Real Amber From Imitation?
This question matters to anyone purchasing amber, and it deserves an honest answer: definitive identification often requires professional expertise and sometimes laboratory analysis. There are no simple home tests that reliably distinguish all genuine amber from all imitations without risk of damaging the specimen.
That said, understanding what you might encounter helps you shop wisely:
What Imitates Amber?
- Plastic and synthetic resins: Modern polymers can closely mimic amber’s appearance. Some are sold honestly as decorative items; others are misrepresented as genuine amber.
- Copal: Young tree resin, sometimes only thousands or hundreds of years old rather than millions. Copal is natural and can contain inclusions, but it lacks amber’s full fossilization. Some sellers distinguish it clearly; others do not.
- Reconstituted or pressed amber: Small pieces of genuine amber fused together under heat and pressure. This is real amber material but not a natural single piece.
- Glass: Occasionally used in very inexpensive imitations.
General Observations (Not Definitive Tests)
Genuine amber tends to feel warm to the touch and is lighter than it looks ÔÇö it can float in saturated salt water, though this test requires care and doesn’t distinguish amber from some plastics. Amber also carries static electricity when rubbed; the Greek word for amber, “elektron,” gave us our word “electricity.” These properties can suggest authenticity but don’t confirm it.
Some sellers describe destructive tests ÔÇö heating amber to smell for a pine-like scent, or touching it with a hot needle. We don’t recommend these approaches. They damage the specimen, and interpreting the results correctly requires experience. A burn mark on a valuable piece is a poor trade for uncertain information.
The Reliable Path
For significant purchases, especially those involving rare or expensive inclusions, professional verification is the appropriate standard. Reputable sellers provide clear information about their sourcing and are willing to answer questions about how they authenticate their material. If something seems too perfect at too low a price, skepticism is reasonable.
Buying from sellers who specialize in amber ÔÇö who understand the material deeply and stake their reputation on authenticity ÔÇö is the most practical protection. A trusted source matters more than any DIY test.
What Gives Amber Its Different Colors?
Amber’s famous honey-gold color is only part of the spectrum. Natural amber occurs in shades ranging from pale yellow through orange, red, brown, and even green or blue. What creates this variation?
- Original resin chemistry: Different tree species produced resins with different compositions, yielding different base colors.
- Inclusion of organic material: Plant debris, air bubbles, and other material suspended in the resin affect how light passes through.
- Oxidation and weathering: Amber’s surface can darken over time with exposure to air and light, developing a richer patina.
- Fluorescence: Some amber, particularly certain Dominican material, contains compounds that fluoresce under ultraviolet light, creating the effect sometimes called “blue amber.”
Heat treatment and other processing can also alter amber’s color. This is common in the industry and doesn’t mean the amber isn’t genuine ÔÇö but it’s one more reason to buy from sellers who are transparent about their material.
How Do You Care for Amber?
Amber is softer and more delicate than most gemstones. It rates only 2 to 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning it scratches relatively easily and can be damaged by rough handling. Thoughtful care keeps it beautiful:
- Store amber separately from harder jewelry that might scratch it. A soft pouch or a lined compartment in a jewelry box works well.
- Avoid chemicals. Perfume, hairspray, cleaning products, and alcohol can damage amber’s surface. Put on amber jewelry after applying cosmetics, not before.
- Keep amber away from extreme heat. As fossilized resin, amber can soften, crack, or even melt under high temperatures. Don’t leave it in direct sunlight on a hot day or near heat sources.
- Clean gently. A soft, slightly damp cloth is usually sufficient. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, and harsh detergents.
- Wear it. The natural oils from your skin can actually help keep amber lustrous. Amber jewelry benefits from being worn rather than sitting forgotten in a drawer.
